The ancient Taoist practices around the 5 Elements are one stream and lineage that is on the rise, bringing wisdom and depth to the wellness world, and we are excited to be bringing this to you at Qi Pilates, Health & Yoga this Spring

Long before our reductionist view of food & the body, a world of isolated ingredients, vitamins & minerals, and separation from the energetics of food, humans understood a holistic nature-based approach to nutrition.  The principles of ancient traditions of food and medicine were an integral part of traditional food culture. The components of eating for health, cooking methods and food preparation with local foods, herbs and plants were key.

This is changing though as we step into new times on the planet, and there is a definitive hum and wave shifting through the collective. You see it in yoga & pilates studios, on retreats, in the rise of wellness centers, community building events, the return to natural agriculture and more people paying attention to where their food comes from, and a resurgence of interest into traditional methods of cultivating Qi and life force like Qigong and Tai chi.

QiGong
All traditional cultures recognised the importance and reverence for nature and the natural world, and cultivating a relationship with it. Living in harmony and balance was always a part of how we not only survived but thrived. Following the cycles of the seasons applied to how we adapted our energy, work load, mental, and emotional wellness, and reflected in this harmony, as a pose to how most of us live in modern times where we live, eat and breathe the same all year round- in cycles of rush, doing too much, stress, and little rest. The language of 5 Element nutrition, also known as Chinese Medicine dietary therapy or nutritional therapy, includes not just macronutrients, micronutrients, but the thermal nature of food, it’s effects on our blood & Qi, and what organ and system in the body it supports. This lens of nutrition is energetic and functional, holistic and tonifying to the mind, body and spirit.

5 Elements are multi-layered and apply to everything through the lens of the 8 branches of Chinese Medicine, from seasonal health, acupuncture, shiatsu massage, reflexology, eating and nutrition, it has always been a holistic approach.  Looking after one’s health starts with the fundamental concept of cultivating, nourishing, building and the smooth flow of Qi, and movement/exercise and nutrition are some of the most accessible ways we can do this.

5 Element nutrition is based on the concepts of not just seasonal eating, but also the different flavours and the energetics they have on the organs, illness, conditions and patterns of imbalance, the relationship of food to our constitution types, conditions and patterns of imbalance such as dryness, heat, cold, damp, which are the basis of all illness and dis-ease in the body.

5 Element Nutrition is nutritional wisdom aligned with mother nature, natural law, cycles and energy. It is not a prescription for what to eat, more an encouragement to learn, feel, intuit and resonate with where you are in terms of your health, energy levels and stage in life. There is no need to feel stressed or obsessed with rules, diets, labels or boxes, 5 Element nutrition is about energy and giving your body, mind & spirit what it needs to thrive.  It offers information, tools & principles that can be applied to all food cultures and kitchens around the world, for life.  The key is consistency and practice.
