Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini Yoga’s purpose is to activate your Kundalini energy, or shakti. This is a spiritual energy that’s said to be located at the base of your spine.
The term “Kundalini” comes from the Sanskrit word “kundal,” (कुण्डलिनी), which means “circular” and this Kundalini energy is conceptualised as a ‘coiled snake’ which sits dormant at the base of your spine, sleeping and unaroused.
Kundalini yoga practice is focused on activating this energy, allowing it to move up and through the chakras located along your spine. As the Kundalini energy rises, it’s believed to help balance the chakras and contribute to your spiritual and physical wellbeing.
The earliest known mention dates to the sacred Vedic collection of writings known as the Upanishads (c. 1,000 B.C. – 500 B.C.) and is most commonly associated with Yogi Bhajan, a yoga teacher from Pakistan who is credited with introducing the practice to Western countries in the late 1960’s.
